Hair Salon a Little History

A hair salon, (also called a beauty salon, hair beauty salon, hair spa), used to be a place for women to get their hair done.

In the 1970's, about the time of the Vietnam War, hair salons and hairstyling became popular with men.

In fact, many traditional barbershops went out of business and the barbers had to re-train for another line of work or become hairstylists themselves.

These former barbers of the 1960's went back to school so they could become adept at doing long hairstyles for men, something that was totally new and unique to them.

They all learned, for the fist time, how to shampoo hair, cut and contour men's hair to look longer and fuller.

A plus for them was that it got them out of the dark ages of the $.95 to $1.00 haircut and into the more lucrative arena of hairstyling.

Hairstylists, today, charge from $25.00 to $50.00 a cut or style. So, they've come a long way baby!

As with anything new, some of the old timers tried to stick it out because they'd always done it that way.

Like the dinosaur, they soon became extinct as one by one, even their older customers fell into the trend of letting their hair grow long and needing the services of a hair salon instead of a traditional barbershop.

Over the years, there has been a trend toward traditional hair cuts and so many shops now offer barber cuts along with the hair salon type of treatments.

It gives you the best of both worlds.
